“That’s Just Weird” 18 Gen Z Trends We Can’t Get Our Heads Around

The teens in our lives can often leave us scratching our heads as we try to understand precisely what is happening. Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with the internet, and they’re always using it to create new trends and subcultures. We look at 18 Gen Z trends that we need to learn about.

VSCO Girls

VSCO girls are influencers who post heavily filtered photos of themselves on the VSCO app. They’re often associated with Hydro Flask water bottles, scrunchies, and the phrase “sksksksk.” It’s OK, we don’t understand it either!

E-Boys and E-girls

E-boys and e-girls are a type of influencer who is known for their alternative fashion and makeup. They’re often associated with black clothing, eyeliner, and chains and have a substantial following on social media.

ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response, and it’s a type of audio designed to trigger a tingling sensation in the listener’s scalp or neck. ASMR videos often feature people whispering, tapping, or crinkling objects.

Mukbang

Mukbang is a Korean word that means “eating broadcast.” Mukbang videos are live streams of people eating large amounts of food. Think “Man v. Food” for the YouTube generation.

A fiesta is a fake Instagram account that users use to post less polished and more personal content. It begs the question of why the personal content is fake and the overly produced one is not!

Yeet

Yeet is a versatile word that can be used as an exclamation, a verb, or an interjection. It’s often used to express excitement, surprise, or confusion. Examples could be “I’m going to yeet this basketball into the hoop” and “I’m going to yeet this piece of paper into the trash can.”

Lit

Lit is a word used to describe something cool, exciting, or impressive. An example could be someone saying to their friend, “This song is lit.”

Fleek

“fleek” describes something perfect, flawless, or on point. It can describe anything from someone’s appearance to a piece of art to a meal. For example, you may say, “Your makeup is on fleek.”

Shade

The term “shade” describes a subtle or indirect insult. It can be thrown in various ways, such as through a sarcastic remark, a dismissive tone, or a side-eye. For example, “The comedian was throwing shade at everyone in the audience, but it was all good fun.”

Spilling Tea

No, this does not mean pouring a beverage down your shirt; tea is a word used to describe gossip or drama. For example, “I’m going to spill the tea about what happened at the party last night.”

Woke

Woke is a word used to describe someone aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice). While younger generations embrace wokeness, older generations say, “You can’t say anything these days.”

Cancel Culture

Cancel culture is a form of public shaming in which someone is ostracized for a perceived wrongdoing. It is common to see celebs and influencers being “canceled” for one lousy tweet from 10 years ago, which older generations cannot understand.

Safe Space

A safe space is where people can feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment. This seems like a totally new concept for older generations who seem to think that Gen Zers are being overly dramatic.

Microaggression

Microaggressions are subtle or indirect forms of discrimination. They can be verbal, nonverbal, or environmental. They can be intentionalor unintentional. An example could be asking a person of color, “Where are you really from?”

Trigger Warning

A trigger warning is a warning that is given before discussing a topic that may be upsetting or triggering to some people. Once again, some older generations believe that younger generations are being too sensitive and need to “get over it”.

Social Distancing

Social distancing is a public health strategy that reduces contact between people to slow the spread of a contagious disease. While everyone had to adhere to social distancing, it will be definitive for Gen Z.

Self-Care

Self-care is caring for one’s mental, physical, and emotional health. It is something that all generations are encouraged to do, but it has been embraced more by Gen Z while older generations have the attitude of “getting on with it.”

Sustainability

Sustainability is using resources in a way that does not harm the environment. Again, it is something that everyone should be a part of, but older generations need help to get their heads around why young people are so passionate about the environment.

These are just a few of the many Gen Z trends out there. Be bold and ask a Gen Z-er if you need clarification on a trend and its meaning. They’ll be happy to explain it to you.
