Trump’s 19 Most Surprising Spending Habits

Trump always brags about his purchases, and as the president, the higher purchases have caused a lot of attraction from the public. Whether he’s buying golf courses, expensive haircuts, or Italian suits, he doesn’t hide the money he spends. However, you might be surprised that some of his purchases are affordable.

Not Paying Contractors

Trump is known for his repeated failure to pay contractors he hired, whether a lawyer, plumbers, architects, or painters. Many contractors who have worked for Trump have stated that they’ve had to accept less than they were owed, or they’d have to choose bankruptcy. While the contractors struggled, Trump continued to boast about his success and wealth. Trump argued that he only withheld the payments if he wasn’t happy with the job done and that he would be a negotiator who wanted to save money for his businesses.

Outfitting His Boeing 757-200

Trump has claimed to have spent over $100 million on his “Trump Force One,” and all of the operating expenses for the plane total to a rough $8-$13 thousand per hour. Even though most 757-200 jets have seating for more than 230 passengers, Trump is only equipped for holding 43 people. When he bought it from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, he spent $10 million on renovations, which included a 24-carat, gold-plated sink, gold seatbelt buckles, and gold service buttons.

Taxes

You might think that someone like Trump would have quite the tax bill at the end of the year, but he hasn’t paid any income tax for ten years. He paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he was elected, and in his first year in office, he also paid another $750.

Chowing Down on Fast Food

Trump has an affection for fast food eateries like KFC and McDonald’s. He has stated that his favorite from McDonald’s is the Filet-O-Fish. If he made it a meal deal, he would be paying $7.69 each time and $4.69 if he wanted the sandwich on its own.

Golf Courses

Trump is an avid golfer, and he owns 19 courses. His most significant is the Trump National Doral, which is near Miami. Trump bought this for $150 million in 2012.

Luxury Cars

A luxurious car is one of the first things most people would buy if they came into a lot of money. Even though he doesn’t drive much and usually has someone driving around for him, this hasn’t stopped him from boasting a pricey collection of cars. Part of his garage includes a 2015 Rolls-Royce Phantom and a 2015 Mercedes-Benz S600, which start at $400,000 and $100,000.

Hairstyling

Trump’s hair is almost, if not more so, famous than he is. However, this hairdo isn’t cheap, and he spent more than $70,000 on his hair during the run on “The Apprentice.” He even paid the bill for his daughter’s look, estimated at $95,464.

Dressing in Brioni Shirts and Suits

Trump once had an eponymous clothing line that was placed in Macy’s. However, Trump never shops at the mall; he prefers to have his attire supplied, usually by the Italian menswear clothier Brioni. Even though you might think this is an extravagant step for the average Joe, the Primo suit he wore on “The Apprentice” cost $3,950.

Running for President

When Trump ran for the presidency in 2016, it wasn’t the cheapest thing he’s done, and he poured $66 million into the campaign. However, the businesses of Trump received $11 million in payments from this, so he managed to get a bit of it back. In the 2020 campaign, Trump didn’t donate any of his own money and instead shifted his money from the campaign fund into his businesses.

Head and Shoulders Shampoo

Trump has a hairdo that he’s proud of, and as mentioned, he spends a lot of money to keep it the way it is. You might think that there is no way that he’s using just any regular shampoo, that he must be using something exclusive. However, you’re mistaken. Trump has stated that he uses Head and Shoulders shampoo on his hair; at most, he spends $2.29 per bottle.

Accessorizing with Hermes Ties

Trump has an expensive taste in suits, which is the same as his designer neckties. Trump cites that Hermes and Brioni are his choice of tie brands, as stated in his “Trump: Think Like A Billionaire” book. These ties average at $195 each.

Buying Portraits of Himself

Believe it or not, Trump spends excessive money on portraits of himself. Trump bought a piece for $100,000 by artist William Quigley. In 2007, it was reported that he spent $20,000 on another portrait of himself.

Splurging on a Megayatch

Even though he no longer sails, in 1987, Trump bought a megayacht that was a massive 282-foot. Trump had reportedly bought this for $29 million. It was stated that he got a $1 million discount for changing the boat’s name when purchasing the yacht. The renovation cost an additional $10 million, but in 1989, Trump wanted to upgrade, which never went through because of financial issues.

Expensive Homes

Trump’s home cost $12 million to build in the 1980s, and the 30,000-square-foot property is now worth an estimated $100 million. In 1985, Trump purchased a 118-room home, now serving double-duty as an exclusive private club. This property cost between $10 and $15 million, estimated at $200 million and $300 million.

Showering Melania with Gifts

We all love to impress and spoil the person we’re in a relationship with, and there is no exception with Trump and Melania. In 2014, for their 10th wedding anniversary, Trump bought Melania a 25-carat diamond ring that had an estimated worth of $3 million.

Displaying Rare Books

If you’re an avid reader, you might enjoy having your books on show for visitors to prise their eyes upon. However, Trump takes this to a whole new level, and on his coffee table, he displays “GOAT: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali.” This book in his New York apartment is estimated at $15,000. Each of these books was signed by Muhammad Ali and Jeff Koons, author of the book, and only 1,000 books were printed.

Dining in New York City’s 21 Club

Trump isn’t a food snob but doesn’t always opt for Mcdonalds and KFC. He has become quite a frequent visitor to 21 Club in New York. During his time there, he usually orders the 21 Burger, which costs $36. Trump will order his burger well-done, with American cheese and a virgin Bloody Mary with a Diet Coke or iced tea.

Snacks on Lay’s and Diet Soda

When you think of a billionaire, you can imagine they snack on caviar and Cristal. Not Trump, he prefers to snack on Lay’s chips, which cost around $3.50. Trump has stated that he has managed to stay away from alcohol for his entire life but has admitted that he loves soda. A 24-pack of Diet Coke costs around $8.

Giving to Charity

Trump has given approximately $130 million to charity and even created his own Donald J. Trump Foundation. However, this dissolved in 2018 due to allegations of a “shocking pattern of ilegality.” He has also given $1 million to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, $100,000 to Baton Rouge, and $10,000 to the Police Athletic League.
