Garage Delusions! 18 Worthless Bits of Trash You Mistakenly Think is Gold

Have you spent some time going through the dark depths of your garage and thought you need to keep everything as a “just in case”? Well, we’re here to help you sort through your stuff and let you know what’s trash and what you definitely don’t need to keep anymore.

Lawn Mower Blades

Lawnmowers last for years, and you’ve probably got one you’ve spent many summers with. However, with a lawnmower, you get blades, and there is no point in keeping the old rusted ones that will have no use anymore. When you’re cutting grass, you at least need blades that are going to work. So, dispose of the old rusted blades properly, and then you can enjoy your lawn mower with its new, shiny blades.

Random Room Items

Do you remember the items that you would once have in your rooms around the house but took them out because of a change of design or colour scheme? You put them in the garage, hoping that one day, you can find another use for them. However, there is no point in keeping them. There is no point in moving one bit of clutter from one room and hiding it in another; it’s just the same as sleeping dirt under the rug. Get rid of it. It isn’t needed.

Propane Tanks

There can be a huge safety risk if you have old propane tanks. If they leak or are stored incorrectly, then your whole garage could go up in flames, and quite frankly, it isn’t worth the risk. You don’t need to keep them, and it’s best to get rid of them properly or take them to a refill station.

Paint Pots

You might think that you’ll need the paint that has been stuck in the garage for years. Most of us have paint in the garage, and it’s not even full when we check. There is no point in keeping old paint pots, no matter how much you might think you’re going to dip into it again in a few months. Not only that, but old paint can spell all kinds of trouble. It won’t spread as smoothly as a new tin, and the colours could’ve altered. Also, if it isn’t handled properly, old paint can be a safety risk.

Old Magazines and Newspapers

We all have a thing for nostalgia, and when we keep old magazines and newspapers, we think that it’ll give us a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling when we come across them again. However, they take up room, and this can lead to depression instead. You don’t need to keep them unless you use them frequently for a DIY project or paper Mache. Recycle them or throw them all away.

Outdated Baby Gear

We always keep anything our children once touched, even if they occupy too much room in your garage. They aren’t needed anymore, whether it’s a crib, car seat, or old high chair. They can cause potential hazards; if they’ve been stored away for a long time, then they might not meet the current safety standards. Use your memories for sentiment, not old tattered furniture.

Old CDs and Tapes

CDs and tapes are rarely used these days. Although they might be perfect for those who like collectables, you don’t need them if that’s not you. They just take up unnecessary space, and it’s best to just get rid of them.

Broken Tools and Equipment

Even if something is broken, there are times when we think that we’ll still use them somehow. It’s hard to walk away from things that have served us at some point. But if you’ve got broken tools and equipment, even though they could hurt you, they take up space that could be used for something else. Keep all of the good tools, and get rid of the bad.

Excess Wires and Cables

When we come across wires and cables, and we’re not 100% sure what piece of equipment they’re supposed to be attached to, we keep them as a “just in case.” However, if they’re in a box that you’ve never seen and can’t remember the last time you’ve gone into it, then it’s better to throw them all. It can cause a problem with knots if you’re keeping them just for the sake of it.

Sporting Gear

Was there a time when you swore you were going to stick to a specific sport, but instead, the gear is in the garage and has been gathering dust for a while? Then you might want to consider either selling the equipment if it’s in good nick or throwing it completely and giving it to the scrap people.

Electronic Devices

It seems that we like to keep old electronics that we’ve updated. Whether it’s an old phone, an old DVD player, or tangled chargers, they just aren’t needed anymore. Some companies will buy these old devices from you. It’s worth looking at rather than letting them build up over the years.

Plastic and Glass Bottles

You might have been subconsciously hoarding old bottles and cans over the years, and it’s time to have a recycling run if this is the case. Bottles and plastics can pile up quickly, meaning they’re taking up unnecessary space that could be better used.

Clothes and Shoes

Have you gone through your or your children’s closets and realized that there are loads that they’ve outgrown? You put them in the garage; they’ve stayed there ever since. There is no point in keeping them anymore in the hope that they’ll magically disappear or fit again. You could choose to donate, recycle or sell them, but as long as they’re gone.

Fixtures and Building Rubble

Have you had a renovation in the past and just shoved all of the rubble in the garage so it’s out of sight, out of mind? Now is the time to go through it and get rid of what you don’t need. Construction materials are definitely something that won’t be used again, and even though they might seem like a good idea to keep, they will just be kept in the dark corner gathering dust.

Bikes and Scooters

There are only so many bikes and scooters that one family needs, and sometimes, as we grow and get to know different equipment, we keep the old ones hiding in the garage while we use the new ones. Or maybe there are bikes or scooters that are missing wheels or have flat tyres. Either way, they’ll be rusting, and it’s time to say goodbye.

Unwanted Holiday Decorations

Have you got any holiday decorations you haven’t used for years but want to keep as a “just in case.”? Just in case you lose all of the others you have, or just in case you’re not bringing enough holiday cheer one year? The Christmas decorations just taking up the garage’s room need to go. There is no point in keeping hold of them.

Receipts and Manuals

When we buy things, we think we need to keep the receipts and manuals for years, even if we’ve already disposed of the item it’s for. Solution? Throw the receipts and manuals that you don’t need. The ones that are gathering dust on a shelf somewhere in the garage. You don’t need them.

Garbage

There is only one place for garbage: in the garbage can. Get yourself to the waste disposal and get rid of it completely and for good. You don’t need this rubbish hanging around because it can cause a problem with rats and other rodents. It will also stink after a while, so tackling this as soon as possible is better.
