We would all love to be clever and think intelligent people have it easy. However, it might not be as easy as we assume. Intelligence in society is valued, especially if you can come to resolutions quickly and find creative solutions. It’s an excellent skill to have, but there are problems that intelligent people face.
Less Satisfied
We all praise those with a higher IQ, thinking that it is easy for them, and many intelligent individuals hold themselves to a higher standard than others. Most of these standards tend to be impossible to achieve and usually unrealistic. Due to this, intelligent people are usually left feeling disappointed and unsatisfied, wanting more each time.
Overcoming Difficulties
It was easy for intelligent individuals to coast through school while others had to experience discipline and study harder and stricter. Intelligent people didn’t have to put much effort or attention into their work to succeed. The fact they coasted through school means that they didn’t have the discipline or strict study routine of their peers. So, when challenging circumstances occur, it can be harder for clever people to overcome them, and they tend to become bored or give up easily.
Decision Paralysis
Overthinking can be a good and bad thing. It is good because it gives them a forefront thought into the multiple perspectives of circumstances. Still, it’s terrible because it means that intelligent people who overthink can find it challenging to make decisions. When a decision is brought forward, they struggle with the pros and cons phase and end up with decision paralysis.
In Need of Constant Stimuli
If you have a high IQ, you might need help facing familiar or easy tasks. Intelligent people also always need something to keep their minds busy, and because of this, they might find mundane tasks not enough, and they could leave the task halfway through finishing. The fact that they need constant stimuli will also mean that small details of jobs could be missed as they hope to move on to the next thing quickly.
Perfectionism
If you have a higher IQ, then you might also experience perfectionism. It might be easy to solve puzzles and work through minor obstacles, but if things aren’t done perfectly, then this can cause intelligent people to beat themselves up and think they’re rubbish. Intelligent people think they should be doing everything excellently the first time.
Have Different Interests
Because intelligent people require constant stimuli, they bounce quickly from one interest to another. Whether it’s current events, politics, history, or technology, it could be something they are doing, like being creative; the interest doesn’t last very long.
Higher Rates of Mental Illness
People with higher IQs tend to be oversensitive, and this means there is a risk of them experiencing mental illness more than the general population. If you’re intelligent, then you might suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, bipolar disorder, and depression, which is prevalent in those who have a higher IQ. This is because clever people are natural overthinkers and have to worry about things more at a higher level.
Social Isolation
The fact that intelligent people feel as if they won’t fit in and nobody understands them can lead to social isolation. Studies suggest that those with higher IQs are most likely to experience loneliness, which can further lead to other issues, as mentioned above.
Difficulty Accepting Criticism
As there is a higher level of IQ and a higher process of stimuli, accepting criticism can be difficult because of the over-sensitivity. This will lead to difficulty in partners being able to effectively communicate in the worry that they’ll cause upset, leaving areas for improvement to fester.
Miscommunication
If you’re brilliant, then you might struggle with communication. It can be confusing for an intelligent person to share their complex thoughts, which means that exchanging ideas with the general population is a task they don’t want to undertake. Intelligent people also need to correct any misinformation, but they don’t tend to do it gracefully or with thought of the other person’s feelings.
Romantic Barriers
The isolation of those with a higher IQ means their social network is usually tiny, so the intimate understanding of emotions isn’t prioritized. Intelligent people tend to focus more on the logical side of their brains, which helps them advance in their careers, but because of this, romantic relationships suffer. Intelligent people will come across as unfeeling and cold to their partners, which makes it challenging to maintain a healthy relationship.
