Lost in Translation: 10 90s Insults Boomers Use That Baffle Gen Z

Everything changes and adapts through the years, including slang, language, and insults. Even though Gen Z has a wide range of witty comebacks and vocabulary, some from the baby boomer era leave us scratching our heads.

“Tool”

Back in the baby boomer time, this was said when someone was too gullible, easily manipulated, or lacked critical thinking skills. This insult was primarily popular in the 90s, and it was often used when someone was a means to an end for others, usually used without their consent or awareness. If you were ever called a “tool,” it usually means your vulnerabilities are being highlighted, and it’s a suggestion that you can be easily exploited.

“Talk to the Hand”

If a boomer wanted to shut someone irrelevant and annoying down, they would use this iconic phrase. It was usually used when someone was showing defiance and attitude, and it would be accompanied by a hand gesture often seen as sassy. If you ever used this insult, it showed a level of control and disinterest in what someone was saying or their opinion.

“Buttmunch”

This insult creates a humorous and slightly derogatory term by combining the words “butt” and “munch.” It was mainly used when friends would lightheartedly mock and tease each other. In the 90s, it lacked severity in the way of other insults and instead created a foundation for cheeky banter and creative wordplay.

“As If!”

This phrase became famous when it was used in the movie “Clueless.” It’s a phrase that was a complete staple in the 90s and was usually said sarcastically to mock someone or express disbelief. If someone said something too far-fetched or ridiculous, you could’ve expected it to be followed by “As if!” Most of the time, you would see an eye-roll being accompanied by the phrase for the person to emphasize the lack of interest in what the speaker is saying.

“Airhead”

If an individual thought someone was superficial or lacking intelligence, they would call them an airhead. It is more of a suggestive phrase that describes someone who is scatterbrained or forgetful. Calling someone an airhead became popular in the 90s to explain celebrities and their lack of intellectual knowledge and depth.

“Wannabe”

If a person tried to imitate a particular group, style, or trend, they would be called a “Wannabe.” Being called this phrase would mean that you weren’t authentic and were trying to fit in to gain acceptance. When the Spice Girls released their song “Wannabe,” the phrase became more popular because the music heightened the importance of individuality while also criticizing those who were spending time trying to be something they were not.

“Dweeb”

If you were considered nerdy, awkward, or uncool, you might have been called a dweeb by a boomer. The phrase would state an excessive preoccupation with academic pursuits or a lack of social skills. If you ended up being called a “dweeb,” then you might’ve been left with feelings of exclusion. This phrase gave a stereotype of intelligent people, ultimately hindering social acceptance.

“Loserville”

Being called “Loserville” meant being unpopular, uncool, and socially awkward. Boomers would use this to demean someone and suggest that the individual wasn’t and couldn’t be a part of the group, so they were classed as outsiders. If a boomer thought that they were of a higher social status, they would be the ones most likely to use this phrase, which ultimately reinforced the cliquish nature of the 90s.

“Poser”

If you were pretending to be someone you’re not, you could be described as a “Poser.” This phrase was most common amongst subcultures like goths, skaters, or punks. It was used when it was thought a person was trying to gain credibility to fit into a specific group by using mannerisms they didn’t understand. It was a serious accusation to be called a “poser” in the 90s, indicating that a person lacked integrity and authenticity.

“Loser”

In the 90s, if you were called a “loser,” then it was a way of someone belittling you, suggesting that you’re unsuccessful and inadequate. Being called a “loser” is often derogatory and emphasizes an individual’s lack of achievements or social status. It might sound harsh, but it was a phrase used daily in the 90s and continues to be a favored insult.
