Outdated Relics: 9 Things Doomed to Extinction Alongside Boomers

Boomers are fading away, meaning some things will fade out with them. Whether it’s cultural norms or outdated technology, you’d be surprised at what we’ll lose simultaneously as Boomers.

Personal Service Expectations

There isn’t much hands-on personal service anymore, which has all been replaced with self-service. The no-contact options seem to drag more people in than anything hands-on, especially since the pandemic. One person said, “The expectations of hands-on personal service, like it’s the 70s, will be replaced by more self-serve no-contact options. There will be no more call-centers and they will be replaced by online chat, email and online tutorials.”

Spam Calls

There was once a time when we didn’t know who was calling us, so falling into the scam caller trap was a lot easier. Now that we have a Caller ID, we can quickly identify those calls. One person said spam callers are unprofitable because fewer people answer random numbers. They said, “Hopefully, it will become unprofitable to make spam calls once there aren’t enough people willing to answer random numbers.”

Newspapers

With more people, including older generations, getting phones that enable the internet, newspapers aren’t wanted anymore. We have all the news we could want at our fingertips. Also, the news is all over the TV, so we don’t need the paper version anymore. “I’m old and haven’t read a newspaper in 10 years. Only good for covering compost.”

China Cabinets

You can’t enter a Boomer’s house without seeing their fine china in a cabinet. This china is only to be used during special occasions; luckily, they won’t be around for much longer. One person said, “China cabinets. I’m Generation X and was strongly encouraged by my family to put china on my wedding registry long ago. I resorted to china to make room for my liquor now that my son is of age.”

Writing Checks

Since we can do almost all banking online or walk into the bank, using checks no longer exists. Someone on the forum said, “Writing a check in the grocery store or writing checks period!”

Standing Cashiers

There was once a time when cashiers would sit down and serve their customers, but standing cashiers are becoming more of a thing! “Not allowing cashiers to sit” is what one person said on the forum.

Attention to Decor and Detail

One person on the forum said they will miss the attention to detail for holidays and meals that Boomers enjoy. “I’ll miss their attention to decor and detail for meals and holidays.” One thing we can give Boomers is that they always go above and beyond.

Cable TV and Landline Phones

We know this will die out with Boomers because of the rise in subscription services like Netflix, Amazon Video, and Disney+. Cable TV is rarely used, and landline phones are never heard of because of the use of cell phones.

“I Hate My Spouse” Humour

Another thing that will die out with the baby boomers is “I hate my spouse” humor. A person on the forum noted that someone who doesn’t like their spouse should file for divorce. Even though we think this might be a bit dramatic, an interesting point is made.
