16 Things You Do to Your Car That Signal to Other Drivers You’re an Idiot

What car you own can tell a lot about who you are as a person, and the same goes for how you treat your car and what you do with it. If you have a car that is quite old and battered, but you decide to keep the interior looking top-notch, then you might be someone who requires little maintenance on the outside, but you likes to be emotionally taken care of. Whereas if you have a newer car and spend a lot of time attending to its inside and outside needs, it could show that you require more maintenance yourself. During a discussion on an online forum, you do certain things to your car, signaling other drivers that you’re an idiot.

Non-Muffling Mufflers

Loud exhausts annoy everyone except the person driving it, making you seem like an idiot. Some drivers add mufflers to their exhausts, but it seems that the mufflers do the exact opposite of what they’re supposed to do, and now you’ve got an even louder car. If you’re driving fast down a road, you look like a jerk, and you might’ve noticed that many of these racer drivers have mufflers. The sound just isn’t worth drawing so much attention to yourself.

“Honk If You’re” Stickers

There is nothing wrong with adding some outside decor to your car in the form of stickers. Some look cool, but others are put in place to distract you from the fact that they are just terrible drivers. These stickers are usually the “Honk If You’re…” ones, and instead of falling into the trap, don’t bother honking back. The only time it’s deemed acceptable to honk is if it’s hilarious and makes your day a bit brighter.

Tinted Plates

There are better ideas than getting a tint over your license plate. Not only does it make it hard to see the plate itself, but in many places, it’s deemed illegal as it looks like you’re trying to cover your identity. If you have a tint on your plate, it is usually a red flag and makes you look like an idiot. It doesn’t stop the tolls from working; you will get pulled over, and it usually makes others think you’re up to no good. It might not have been the initial intention when you get it installed, but it’s worth avoiding.

Nice Blinker

Nothing is more frustrating for a good driver than being behind or in front of those who don’t use their indicators. Even if you see someone with a broken indicator, it can be annoying, but being so arrogant and ignorant that you don’t feel the need to use it is downright annoying. It’s also a warning sign that if you see someone not using their blinkers, it’s best to avoid driving near them.

Pop and Crackle Engine Map

Cars are built with engine efficiency, meaning your car runs and drives as well as it should, causing you to have a good car for many years. However, some people add pops and crackles to their engines, making for an annoying sound. One person said, “A team of engineers spent many years optimizing the engine mapping of your car, balancing performance and efficiency, just for you to overwrite it with some stuff from the internet, so it sounds like a Group B rally car with a misfire.”

Peeing Calvin Decals

A classic comic strip brings us many childhood memories called “Calvin and Hobbes.” However, these have now been turned into car stickers, and many people have them. There are a series of images on the backs and sides of cars of Calvin having a wee. Most of these stickers of Calvin are usually on words and symbols that relate to various subjects, but mainly politics. The stickers show that people have poor taste, but it also goes against the original, excellent material. One commenter said, “It perverts and subverts what Calvin stood for. He had an overzealous imagination that bordered on, at worst, mischievous. He was never malicious.”

Loud Exhausts

Another annoyance and way of showing someone that you’re an idiot driver is having loud exhausts. Most of the time, the loud exhausts are usually accompanied by loud music, making it even more frustrating for your average driver. One user expressed annoyance by saying, “It’s stupid and does nothing but make noise.” Not only that, but the car’s overall performance will lower due to the loud exhaust.

Middle Finger Anything

You can show someone you’re annoyed in all types of ways. Whether it’s using flags, stickers, or decals, there is usually a way in which you can display these flipping-the-bird signals. If you put these vibes out there and you don’t think it’s too much or you’re acting unbothered, this will also annoy other drivers, who will think you’re an idiot. One person commented that they work with a gentleman who uses this gesture all over his truck, and he said, “Yet he is the most touchy and sensitive baby in the entire joint.”

Salt Life Stickers

Many people read Salt Life as something else, and it takes a while for them to figure out what is actually said. It was a poor design; many thought it was a sign of idiocy. However, there is another reason why it’s classed as being stupid: people complaining that the stickers were used in areas that weren’t even near salt water. One person from Minnesota said, “We have 10,000 lakes. No salt,” claiming that they see the sticker everywhere.

Locally Hated Decals

No matter where you’re from, there are bound to be specific decals that can rub you up the wrong way. If you have one of these stickers, you can be sure that you’re likely to be avoided or called an idiot for using it. However, some people have the decal “Locally Hated” on their cars. It’s big and bright for everyone to see. The point? We don’t know. One person said, “Extra points if the moron plasters a second “Locally Hated” sticker across their windshield. I’ve seen a few of these idiots.”

Stick Figure Family

We know this might be seen as sweet to some people; to others, it’s just annoying, and you could be branded an idiot for having it. Some people like to have their whole family in stick figure stickers on their back windshield window. It’s pretty nice if there are just three of you in your family, but when it extends to take over your whole window, it can seem a bit idiotic. Another thing following on from this that annoys people is having the names of the family members underneath the stick figures. This goes a bit too far and causes even more annoyance.

“Punisher” Skulls

It’s cool if you like the Marvel Comic series, but having the Punisher skulls thrown all over your car can make you seem stupid and obsessive. Another problem with the Punisher skull is that it can be taken in a different light in the same matter as the image of Calvin. Even though the Punisher is an anarchist, many police have decided that it’s not a great way of saying you’re a good person and have taken it as a way to represent themselves.

Outside Speakers

It’s bad enough if you drive past someone blasting their music inside their car, but when they have outside speakers, it takes a bit too far. This happens more and more, and it isn’t enjoyable for everyone. One person shared their annoyance by saying, “They’re never listening to good music.” This fact makes it even more painful for outsiders who have to listen to whatever is banging on.

MLM Advertisement

We understand people advertising their businesses on their cars, and this is fine; it gets customers in, and we think that’s great. However, people have expressed annoyance with people promoting MLM (multi-level marketing) on their cars. MLM is a pyramid scheme in which people lose more money than they gain, causing debt and mental health issues. We understand that if people promote this on their cars, we believe they aren’t great with their finances.

Fake Bullet Holes

Name a more significant turn-off than someone putting fake bullet holes into their car. Gun crimes aren’t something to be glamorized, and in fact, it’s pretty worrying seeing a car with these plastered on them. One person said, “It’s like ‘the kind of life I lead just might put me in the line of fire, except not because, you know, they are not real.” It does make people wonder what the owner of the car is getting up to if they can proudly add these to their car decor.

Blinding Headlights

Have you ever been driving and found yourself coming face to face with a car that has its headlights on way too bright? You worry that you might crash and can’t see anything in front of you. Well, these people know that their cars are blinding people, and it could cause serious collisions. One person said, “They have to know they’re blinding people and if they don’t, they’re stupid.”
