18 Hotspots Burglars Target for Your Valuables That Will Make You Rethink Your Safety

by Emily Clarkson

Some of us think of the worst scenarios regarding our way of living. We don’t want to keep our valuables out in the open if we get robbed. So, we think of the best places to hide those items. However, the places you might think are safe could be the first place a burglar will look when they enter your home. We have a list of spots that are primarily targeted during a steal.

Electric Box

This might seem like the perfect place to hide your cash or valuables, and you would think that nobody would think to check in them. However, your items would still be considered unsafe during a burglary unless you can lock your electric box. If you can’t unlock them, don’t use them, as it’s one of the top places to check first.

Entryway Drawers and Cabinets

Many of us keep our cash and important documents by the door as they’re easy to find and grab when we move. Although, putting these by your entryway will give the burglar a quick and easy time, as many burglars tend to search through areas close to exits. So, any storage places close to your front or back entryways are usually the first point of target, so you might want to reconsider what you’re keeping in them.

Shed or Garage

These hot spots for burglars should be kept minimal to throw them off. Most burglars tend to go to sheds and garages because of the cars, bikes, and tools, and if they’ve been stealing for a while, they will also look for other valuables. If you decide to keep anything in these locations, it’s best to keep them very well disguised so it blows the burglar off the scent.

Bedroom Closets

We’re all becoming more aware that the bedroom closet shouldn’t hold any valuables. Most burglars aim for the closet for jewelry boxes and cash. Some will even search through the pockets of jackets for any loose change. If you decide to keep these valuables in your closet, label it with something unappealing to the burglar, such as ‘family photos,’ ‘magazine subs,’ or ‘old newspapers.’

Shoe Boxes

It’s doubtful that we’ll keep any shoe boxes these years unless you plan on keeping some valuables in them, such as jewelry. If you’ve got a sizeable jewelry collection, a shoe box might be the ideal place to store them. If not, you might keep your most expensive designer shoes or sneakers in their original box. However, these boxes are appealing to burglars. Be mindful that it isn’t always the most prominent item that burglars seek; they want anything that will give them a bit of cash.

Window and Door Areas

Some people keep little boxes on their window sills or near doors to keep things safe. However, this isn’t safe and is one of the hot spots for burglars. Whether it’s key boxes, windowsills, shelves, and other nooks, these places usually contain keys, cash, or other little valuable items, prizes for burglars.

Underwear Drawers

We always think a burglar wouldn’t dare enter our underwear drawer. However, it is one of the first places a burglar will look. They won’t be after your undies, but they’ll search for cash or jewelry. It’s best to find a safer place for these valuables.

Dresser Drawers
There is usually no drawer unturned for burglars because they don’t want to miss the chance of finding cash and jewelry. They will search through your vanity drawers and maybe even your makeup bags. Due to many movies, this is where burglars think that anything valuable will be kept, so prove them wrong.

Behind Picture Frames

We all have spare cash lying around the house waiting for a rainy day. However, one of the main spots for a burglar to look for money and valuables is behind picture frames. We tend to think of movies when we think of someone keeping items behind frames, but it does work. Although, not good enough as it’s one of the first places burglars will look. It might surpass a less-experienced one, but you don’t want to risk it.

Under the Mattress

Believe it or not, this is one of the first places a burglar will look. They don’t tend to keep their searches to one mattress; if they look under one, they’ll look under them all. Of course, if you’re home when a burglar enters, they won’t waste time flipping over mattresses, but it’s worth bearing in mind that burglars will look if you’re not home.

Suitcases

If your suitcases are in prominent places, such as your closet, then a burglar will open them to see if you’ve got any valuables in there. Suitcases can hold a lot of stuff, and burglars know this. As homeowners, we like to use space as much as possible, and this is the same with hiding valuable items. However, be careful with it because burglars will check everywhere!

Portable Safe

We have safes to keep things safe (obviously!), and as you may be aware, maintaining a safe can be dangerous because burglars will always try and search through them or take them with them. If you have a safe not attached to the wall or floor, you may as well physically hand your valuables straight to the burglar. However, if you have a heavy safe or one attached to your home, a burglar will be less likely to pay much attention to it as they don’t want to get caught spending too much time on it.

Liquor Cabinet/Wine Cellar

Burglars aren’t fussy, and they’re opportunists. So, if you’ve got a young burglar, they will take anything, including alcohol. Don’t hide valuables in a liquor cabinet or wine cellar; give them a double whammy. Luckily, you can replace a bottle of alcohol, but you might not be able to replace whatever else they might get their hands on while searching through the cabinet.

Medicine Cabinets

An experienced burglar will even take medicine from your cabinet to sell it forward on the black market. This might not be the biggest deal because the medication can be replaced, but you mustn’t store anything else valuable in those cabinets. You might think at first that it’s a great place to hide things; burglars will believe they’ve hit the jackpot if they’re looking for medicine and come across other valuable items.

Kitchen Storage Containers

We all think we’re one step ahead of burglars by hiding valuables inside kitchen storage containers. However, unfortunately, this isn’t going to stop you from getting burgled. One of the main places they search is within these containers, and they will most likely move onto the cutlery drawer and the freezer. It might be better to find a safer place.

Freezer

As mentioned, the freezer is one of the most common places where a burglar will look for valuables. We might think that it’s the best place to hide our items, but burglars are sneaky, and they know exactly where to look for them. If you want to outsmart a burglar, and the freezer is one of the only safe places to hide cash, put it into a frozen food box to put them off the scent.

Vases

If you’ve got some fake plants or flowers, you might consider putting in cash to hide and keep safe. However, this isn’t the best idea because burglars will search through these. It’s rare for them to leave a stone unturned. This is why they usually leave such a mess when they burgle because they like to ransack breakable items instead of delicately feeling around for a valuable thing.

Office Drawers

We keep all sorts of important documents in our office drawers, including bank statements, passports, and other valuables you would want to avoid falling into the wrong hands. It can be difficult to hide these in your home, but it might be a good idea to put them somewhere and label them with things that anyone can’t use, such as ‘car tax info.’
